This topic provides a sample topology for a small-scale deployment. The small-scale deployment topology expands on the single-server deployment topology (described in the Single server deploymenttopic).

Note the following characteristics about this topology:

  • This topology does not require Kerberos authentication.

  • This topology does not offer scalability or high availability. Scalability and high availability are introduced in the Large-scale deploymenttopology.

The following diagram shows a sample topology for small-scale deployment.

The following list describes how the computers in this sample topology are used:

  • An Active Directory domain controller is required for deploying Microsoft Dynamics AX components.

  • Microsoft Dynamics AX Windows clients connecting over a Wide Area Network (WAN) are configured to use Terminal Services to communicate with the AOS. Microsoft Dynamics AX Windows clients on the Local Area Network (LAN) are configured to communicate with the AOS directly.

  • Application files and the Application Object Server (AOS) are deployed on a single server computer.

  • External applications use the Application Integration Framework (AIF) or the .NET Business Connector for integration with Microsoft Dynamics AX.

  • A Web server can host one or more of the following components:

    • Reporting Services

      Note Note

In this topology, the Web server hosts both the Reporting Services Windows service and the Reporting Services database.

    • Analysis Services

    • Enterprise Portal

    • Workflow

    • Application Integration Services (AIF) Web services

  • The server running SQL Server hosts the Microsoft Dynamics AX online transaction processing (OLTP) database.
