This topic describes considerations in planning 32-bit and 64-bit hardware and software. For up-to-date hardware and software requirements for Microsoft Dynamics AX, see the System requirements Web page.
Microsoft Dynamics AX server components can be installed on either a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system. Consider the following when planning your hardware and software.
-
The Microsoft Dynamics AX Windows client is a 32-bit application. You can either install it on a 32-bit Windows operating system or run it in a 32-bit mode on a 64-bit operating system.
-
The Microsoft Dynamics AX server components are 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The setup program automatically detects the operating system in use and deploys appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit executable files.
-
Setup installs both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of the .NET Business Connector when running on a 64-bit operating system to ensure compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit managed code.
-
When you install the server components on a 64-bit operating system, you can also use 64-bit versions of all prerequisites.
-
The Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 setup program only installs Microsoft Dynamics AX components. If you are deploying Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft BizTalk Server, see the product documentation for these products for their system requirements.

Caution |
---|
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 server components are not supported on the Itanium platform. For details on hardware and software requirements, see the System requirements Web page. |
Note |
---|
Microsoft SQL Server can be deployed on an Itanium server. In that case, the Application Object Server (AOS) can use the SQL Server database as long as SQL Server is deployed on a separate host from the Microsoft Dynamics AX server components. |
