Operations represent the tasks that are required to produce items in your production. To set up operations, you must know what task or activity will be completed, the order of the process and operation priorities, and which and how many work centers will perform the operation.

Note Note

Define work center groups and work centers before you create operations. The parameters that you assign to work center groups are inherited by the work centers and by the operations that occur in that work center. You can change these inherited parameters at any time. If you are working with routes, operations must be defined for each production route that you set up.

Creating operation networks

You can set up operations to form different kinds of networks depending on your production processes. An operation network is a series of operations linked in sequence. The network is the route the item must take through the manufacturing process in order to emerge as a finished product. You can work with two kinds of networks that are controlled by the Route network parameter, which is set in the form:

  • Simple - Unless specified, each operation in the route is completed before the next operation is begun. This option is used if the Route network parameter is not selected.

  • Complex - When it is necessary, operations in the route can be set up in parallel. This option is used if the Route network parameter is selected.

Set up an operation

  1. Click > > > .

  2. Press CTRL+N to create a new line.

  3. In the field, enter an alphanumeric identifier for the operation that you want to create.

  4. In the field, enter the name of the operation.

Define overview of operation relations

  1. Click > > > > .

  2. On the tab, in the field, select the item code:

    • – The operation refers to a single item with a specific item number.

    • – The operation refers to a group of items within a given Item - Customer group.

    • – The operation can be used on all items.

  3. If you selected or in step 2, in the field, select the item number or item group that you want to use for the operation. Otherwise, leave the field blank.

  4. If you selected in step 2, in the field, enter the configuration (the item's dimension) to use for the operation. Otherwise, leave the field blank.

  5. In the field, select the kind of association the operation will have with the route:

    • –Associate the operation with a single route.

    • – Associate the operation with all routes.

  6. If you selected in step 5, in the field, enter the number to use for the operation. Otherwise, leave the field blank.

  7. In the field, select the work center group or associated work centers where the operation will occur.

Define general operation relations

  1. Click > > > > .

  2. On the tab, in the field, you can view the item code that you selected for the operation. This field is automatically completed with information from the tab.

    • – The operation refers to a single item with a specific item number.

    • – The operation refers to a group of items within a given Item - Customer group.

    • – The operation can be used on all items.

  3. In the field, you can view the item number or item group that you selected for the operation. This field is automatically completed with information from the tab, but you can change it here if necessary.

  4. If is selected in the field, in the field, enter the configuration to use for the operation. Otherwise, leave the field blank.

  5. In the field, view the association that the operation will have with the route. This field is automatically completed with information from the tab, but you can change it here if necessary.

    • ( – Associates the operation with a single route.

    • – Associates the operation with all routes.

  6. If you selected in step 5, in the field, view the number that the operation will have. This field is automatically completed with information from the tab, but you can change it here if necessary.

  7. In the field, view the operation on which you are setting up detailed information. This field is automatically completed with information from the tab, but you can change it here if necessary.

  8. In the field, view or select the work center or work center group number to use for the operation.

  9. If is selected in the field, in the field, view or enter the number of work centers that the operation is scheduled for. (This field will always have the number 1 if you selected in the field.)

  10. In the field, enter the percentage of maximum capacity load that was reserved for the operation.

  11. In the field, if applicable, select the operation characteristics to use when the operation is being planned.

Operation characteristics are values from the properties table specified on the calendar. When a production order is being scheduled, the production's operation with the defined property can be scheduled only on time intervals where the same property value is specified in the calendar.

    Note Note

in order to schedule by using properties, you must set the Finite propertiesparameter on the work center and in the production scheduling settings.

  12. In the field, select the routing group to use for the operation.

Routing groups control how the operation will be calculated, how the feedback will be provided on the operation, and how the operation will be scheduled and job-managed.

  13. In the field, select whether the operation will engage the external ( ) or internal ( ) work center. The default is an internal work center.

Define operation relations setup

  1. Click > > > > .

  2. On the tab, in the field, select the method for calculating the run time for the operation:

    • – Use manually entered values for the run time.

    • – Calculate the run time based on the capacity specified on the work center.

  3. In the field, select the cost category to use for the setup costs of the operation.

  4. In the field, select the cost category to use as an estimate of the cost of run time associated with the operation.

  5. In the field, select the quantity category to use when the operation is conducted. The quantity category designates the cost price for each unit of finished item that was used in the estimate of the production order associated with the operation.

  6. In the field, select the task group to use for the operation.

  7. In the field, enter the minimum requirement to be met.

  8. In the field, enter the formula factor to use for the operation.

The formula factor is used when is selected in the field. The capacity value from the work center will then be divided by the value in order to calculate the process quantity. If it is zero, it is disregarded.

Define operation relations times

  1. Click > > > > .

  2. On the tab, in the field, enter the queue time before the operation starts.

  3. In the field, enter the time that is required to set up the work center before the operation starts.

  4. In the field, enter the time that is required to produce the process quantity on the work center.

  5. In the field, enter the quantity that can be produced during the time specified in the field.

    Note Note

and are interdependent fields. One value cannot exist without the other.

  6. In the field, enter the transportation time that is used to move the item from one operation to another or from one work center to another.

  7. In the field, enter the time that the item waits at the work center after the operation is completed.

  8. In the field, enter the time to use for the operation. This time is presented in hours with four decimals.

  9. In the field, enter the quantity of finished items that can be moved between operations. This quantity is also used to calculate the overlap quantity during estimation of production orders.

Add descriptive information to operation relations

  1. Click > > > > .

  2. On the tab, type a detailed description of the operation in the available field.
