You must create work center groups before you create the work centers that you will use in your production. These groups should be organized according to the logic and complexity of your manufacturing environment. The work centers in a group should perform similar functions and share similar attributes so that they can be used interchangeably during scheduling.

For example, you can group machines that do the same type of work at the same capacity, and group machine operators that have the same skills for operating those machines. Then when you schedule production, you can select any machine or operator in the group to perform the operation.

You can also use work center groups to manage system information. For example, if you post a particular work center group to the ledger, you do not have to post financial data for each of the work centers individually.

Create a work center group

  1. Click > .

  2. Press CTRL+N to create a new line in the table.

  3. In the field, enter an alphanumeric identifier for the work center group that you want to create.

  4. In the list, select one of the following types of work center groups: , , , or .

  5. In the field, enter a name for the work center group.

  6. In the list, select the calendar that the work center group will be using.

Set up general information for a work center group

  1. Click > .

  2. Select the work center group for which you will be setting up general information.

  3. On the tab, in the list, select the type of work center group that you are creating. The options are , , , or .

  4. In the field, enter the name of the work center group.

  5. If you selected the option in the field (in step 3), select the appropriate vendor in the list. If not, leave it blank.

  6. In the field, enter a percent that represents the work center group's efficiency. This is used for planning purposes in connection with the calendar.

  7. In the field, enter a percent that represents the maximum capacity of the work center group that you want to use in operation scheduling.

This value should be less than 100 percent in order to ensure flexibility in capacity when job scheduling, which is done closer to the actual time of the scheduled production. A value of around 50 percent is commonly used.

  8. In the list, select the calendar used for the work center group. This field is automatically completed from the information entered when the work center group was created.

  9. Select the check box if you want this work center group to be used with limited capacity. If this check box is cleared, the system will not consider the capacity of this work center group during scheduling.

Set up ledger information for a work center group

The information on the tab is dependent on the accounting method used. These fields are required if the method is . These fields are not required if the method is or if production groups are used.

  1. Click > .

  2. Select the work center group for which you will be setting up ledger information.

  3. On the tab, in the list, select the account to use for the (WIP) issue.

  4. In the list, select the work-in-process account to use for the work center group.

  5. In the list, select the account to use for work center group issues.

  6. In the list, select the offset account to use for work center group issues.

Set up operation information for a work center group

  1. Click > .

  2. Select the work center group for which you will be setting up operation information.

  3. On the tab, in the list, select the routing group to associate with the work center group.

    Note Note

If the routing groups have not been created yet, this can be done later.

  4. In the field, enter a percent that represents the amount of scrap material left over by the work center.

For example, if eight-tenths (0.80) of a bolt of fabric is used for shirts, the scrap percent is 0.20 or 20 percent.

  5. If relevant, select a task group in the list for the alternative work center.

  6. If relevant, enter a numeric value in the field that represents the minimum requirement for the capability/skill level of the alternative work center used for the work center.

  7. In the list, select the cost group for the setup costs associated with this work center.

    Note Note

This field and the next two fields must be filled out if you want to manage and identify the costs used in production.

  8. In the list, select the cost group for the run time costs associated with this work center.

  9. In the list, select the cost group for the costs associated with the quantities produced by this work center.

Set up times information for a work center group

  1. Click > .

  2. Select the work center group on the tab.

  3. On the tab, in the field, enter the time required for the job to wait at the work center group before setup or work is performed.

  4. In the field, enter the time required to refit the equipment or prepare the work center group for production of the next scheduled item.

  5. In the field, enter the time it takes to process a piece or lot of a specific operation in the work center group.

  6. In the field, enter the process quantity or the quantity that can be produced with the given times listed in the and fields.

  7. In the field, enter the standard time it takes to move items from one operation to the next in this work center group.

  8. In the field, enter the time required after the processing of the item in this work center group.

  9. In the field, enter the conversion factor you want to use for the work center group.

    Note Note

If hours are used in this calculation, the conversion factor is 1.00. If minutes are used, the conversion factor is 0.0167.

  10. In the field, enter the overlap quantity, which is the quantity to be produced before the next operation in the production route can begin.
