This topic covers the description and usage of consistent inventory dimensions. There is also a section on exceptions to the rules.

About consistent dimensions

The program assigns some dimensions the default value of being consistent. When a dimension is consistent, you cannot change the dimension value on an inventory transaction once physical transactions are in progress. The consistent setting ensures that the dimension values are kept the same for all inventory transactions that share the same number, including the source transaction. If you attempt to change a consistent dimension value, the program displays an error message, and you cannot carry out the change.

The program sets the item dimensions, , , and , and the storage dimension, to consistent, and you cannot change the setting. The remaining inventory dimensions cannot be set to consistent.

Note Note

The dimension is configured in the form, which is located at > > > .

Using consistent dimensions

Consistent inventory dimensions are used in the following ways:

  • With the multisite functionality, the site dimension is kept consistent to ensure that all related transactions are assigned to a particular site. When a company also links a financial dimension to the site, the company can then attribute profit and loss figures to the site.

  • With consistent item dimensions, you cannot change dimension values once you have started processing an order line that generates inventory transactions. If you attempt to change a dimension value, the program displays an error message stating that the dimension value must be kept consistent, and you cannot carry out the action. Using consistent dimension values enables a company to keep track of the original transaction and trace it through to its completion.

    Note Note

Instead of changing dimension values on an order line, you can split the order line and create a new order to specify different dimensions.

  • If you reverse-pick an order by posting a negative quantity, you can revert the inventory transaction status to its previous state (before physical transactions take place). It is then possible to change the dimensions.

  • When you open a form in the context of an inventory transaction (a lookup form on an order line, for example), the consistent dimensions are visible, and the form contains only inventory-related transactions that share the same consistent dimension values.

Exceptions

There are instances where the consistent dimensions do not apply, and where you can override the consistent dimension value. These are:

  • In the case of sales orders, the site dimension consistency is not enforced when transactions have been financially updated. This scenario allows you, for example, to make multiple shipments from different sites, against the same order line.

  • You can still edit the , , and item dimensions by using the form. This scenario allows you, for example, to resolve an issue that contains erroneous item dimensions, even though the change may result in an inconsistency between dimension values.

  • If the financial dimension link is not locked, you can also edit the dimension by using the form.
