After you create the appropriate dimension sets as described in Create a dimension set, you create dimension hierarchies for the dimension sets.

  1. Click > > > .

  2. In the upper pane, select the dimension set for which you want to create a dimension hierarchy.

  3. In the lower pane, press CTRL+N to create a new line for a dimension hierarchy.

  4. In the field, enter a unique identification for the hierarchy.

  5. In the field, enter a brief description of the hierarchy.

  6. Click to define the particular dimension values that are contained in the selected dimension set hierarchy as combinations on a grid or as a tree structure. For this procedure, select the check box to work in the tree structure.

  7. On the tab in the left pane of the form, set up the hierarchy of the dimension values that are contained in the selected dimension set hierarchy:

    1. Drag the dimension values from the tab in the right pane into the tree presentation pane on the tab. You can select and drag several values at once.

    2. Only values for one dimension at a time are available in the right pane. To see the values of other dimensions, select another dimension in the field.

  8. Repeat the process of dragging dimension values to the tree until you have constructed the correct tree structure for the selected dimension set hierarchy.

  9. If appropriate, use expressions to generate multiple value combinations. Instead of selecting a single value, select a range of values by entering an expression. For example, P* identifies all values starting with P.

  10. To add an expression, select a dimension in the tree and then double-click, or click at the appropriate place in the tree. In the right pane, in the field on the tab, enter the expression.

  11. To view all the value combinations that are defined by the structure (and expand any expressions that have been used), select the check box. The dimension values that start with a "P" are then generated in the tree structure.

  12. To ensure that there are no duplicates, select the check box and then the check box. Errors are highlighted and you can move to the next or previous error by clicking the appropriate icon.

If there are no errors, the button is activated.

By selecting the on the tab on the left pane, the field appears in the grid on the right pane. When you click the check box, the field is updated with the number of times that the element is used in the row structure.

  13. Click to save the dimension set hierarchy as a list of value combinations to be used when transactions with dimension values are posted (or updated and posted). The updated hierarchy ensures that only correct dimension values are posted on transactions.

When you click , the field is updated with the system date, and the check box is selected.

  14. Close the form, and notice that the check box has been selected in the lower pane in the form.

  15. Select the check box on the line in the lower pane to allow the dimension set hierarchy to be used in dimension set rules, which you create in the form.

When all dimension set hierarchies have been defined and updated—and when you have created dimension set rules (if you decide to use them) as described in Create dimension set rules—you must activate the dimension sets and dimension set hierarchies as follows:

  1. Click > > .

  2. On the tab, in the drop-down list, select or :

    • - Activated when transactions are posted to ledger accounts (according to the set hierarchy and the dimension set rules that apply to each ledger account).

    • - Activated when transactions are posted to ledger accounts and when other records are updated.

NoteIf a dimension is not a component of a dimension set, users can freely set the dimension values that are defined for the dimension on transactions to ledger accounts that are not governed by dimension set hierarchies or dimension set rules..
