About activating the multisite functionality

The multisite activation process enables a customer to activate the multisite functionality for a Microsoft Dynamics AX company. The process is initiated by the and entails:

  • Activating the site and warehouse inventory dimensions in all dimension groups

  • Making the site dimension mandatory on all inventory transactions

  • Updating all transactions with an association to a site

After the multisite functionality has been activated, the site dimension becomes mandatory. The mandatory site dimension ensures that a site value is entered on all inventory transactions.

Note Note

For customers who perform a new installation of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 the multisite functionality is activated by default.

Customers who upgrade from an earlier version of Microsoft Dynamics AX or Microsoft Dynamics AX, must run the and activate the multisite functionality. Because the company will most likely contain data when you run the wizard, deactivating the multisite functionality afterward is not a usual scenario.

Task overview for activating the multisite functionality after an upgrade

A customer who has upgraded from earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX or Microsoft Dynamics AX must perform the following tasks to activate the multisite functionality:

  1. Prepare the Microsoft Dynamics AX master data for the multisite functionality:

    • Define the site structure and the relationships between sites and warehouses.

    • Ensure that all production resources and transactions can be related to these sites.

  2. Run the report to:

    • Analyze the state of the current master data.

    • Generate a report that lists any transaction-related issues that would prevent the multisite functionality from being activated.

    Note Note

Running this report is optional, because the performs the same analysis. You can run the report before you run the wizard as a preparatory step.

    • The site dimension becomes mandatory, and a site value must appear on all inventory transactions.

    • A warehouse value must be entered on all issues and receipts (blank issues and receipts are not allowed for the warehouse dimension).

Prepare MSDAX5 master data for multisite functionality

All customers who intend to use the multisite functionality must prepare their master data as described in the following steps.

A new Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 customer must set up their master data after installation. New transactions will then be generated according to the correct dimension setup.

For a customer who has upgraded to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, preparing the master data is a crucial prerequisite step that must be performed before activating the multisite functionality.

To prepare the master data:

  1. Create sites.

    Click > > > .

Run the Multisite activation readiness report

The report provides details of any transaction-related issues that could prevent the multisite functionality from being activated.

The LogisticsAdvanced configuration key must be enabled to perform this task.

  1. Click > > > to open the report.

  2. In the field, select a site from the lookup form, or enter a site to set as the default site to use when no warehouse is associated with a transaction. If a default site is stored in the database for this company, the field may be populated with the stored value, but you can override it.

  3. In the field, enter the name of a new warehouse to set as the default warehouse to use when no warehouse is associated with a transaction. If a default warehouse is stored in the database for this company, the field may be populated with the stored value, but you can override it.

    Note Note

The warehouse that you enter must be new: The warehouse name must not exist and must never have existed. There cannot be any existing transactions that reference the warehouse. If these conditions are not met, the program displays an error message, and the report is not generated.

  4. Select whether to generate the report directly or in batch.

  5. Click OK.
