About mandatory dimensions
In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, you can set certain inventory dimensions to be mandatory for a dimension group. When a dimension is mandatory, it appears on all journal entries that create an inventory transaction. When you create a journal or a transaction, you must enter a dimension value.
Using mandatory dimensions
Mandatory inventory dimensions are used in the following ways:

Mandatory dimensions ensure that users specify dimension values on all inventory transactions.

Mandatory dimensions ensure the visibility of dimension values on all inventory transactions. A mandatory warehouse dimension, for example, enables users to track the location of inventory items.

When the multisite functionality is activated, the site storage dimension is mandatory. This setting ensures that all inventory transactions are associated with a site so that master planning functions across all sites.
Configuration of mandatory dimensions
The mandatory setting varies, depending on the dimension. Here are the rules:

The program always sets the item dimensions, , , and to mandatory. The mandatory setting applies when the multisite functionality is active or inactive.

The program sets the storage dimension, , to mandatory when you activate the multisite functionality.

You can choose whether or not to set the storage dimension, , to mandatory regardless of whether or not the multisite functionality is active.
You configure the dimension in the form, which is located at > > > .

You cannot set the remaining inventory dimensions, ( , , , or ) to mandatory.
When you set an inventory dimension to mandatory, the following configuration values also apply:
