Use this form to create definition groups. Definition groups define the tables and formats that are used for export and import data. Definition groups are required when you export data, but not when you import data.

The following rules apply to importing data:

  • If you select a definition file, only the defined table is imported.

  • If you do not select a definition file, everything from a given file is imported.

  • If you create a definition group for import some of the dependant tables may not be imported.

If you do not want to use a definition group, use the dialog from the menu.

If you have used the Microsoft Excel Template Wizard, the definition group was created by the wizard. For information about how to use the Microsoft Excel Template Wizard, see Microsoft Office Excel Template Wizard (form).

The following tables provide descriptions for the controls in this form.

Buttons

Button

Description

Display and add tables to export data from or export data to.

If the selected is or , then the format must be defined for each table. The form has additional tabs and a button for field setup for this purpose. For information about table setup, see Table setup (form).

Export data from the tables listed in the selected definition group into a .dat file or to a Microsoft Excel workbook. This functionality does not apply to type definition groups.

Important Important

Be sure to save exported files in a folder that has appropriately restricted permissions. In particular, allowing access to the data from the following tables can potentially expose confidential or security information: SysConfig, SysUserInfo, AccessRightsList, UserGroupInfo, UserInfo, and UserGroupInfo.

If unsecured data from these tables is edited and then imported, you run the risk of potentially providing increased access to the Microsoft Dynamics AX system.

The batch tab is used to queue jobs for batch processing. For more information, see Prepare batch processing on the Batch tab.

Import standard files from a selected definition group. The file that you want to import must have been created by exporting from Microsoft Dynamics AX, either as a .dat file or to Microsoft Excel, so that it is in the required format.

Copy the selected definition group, including all tables, fields, and data queries.

If you copy from a type to an type, then you must remove the tables the type does not support.
